Mega Millions jackpot jumps to $750 million, that’s ₹5,400 crore

Des Moines: The latest Mega Millions prize has rolled over and lottery players now have a chance to win $750 million (around ₹5,400 crore), the fifth largest jackpot in US history, on Friday night.

Tuesday night’s Mega Millions jackpot was $625 million, but no ticket matched the winning numbers: 12-14-26-28-33, and mega ball: 09.

For Powerball, the other big-ticket US lottery game, the jackpot for the draw on Wednesday is $550 million.

The jackpot prize money is for those who choose annuities that are paid out over a 30-year period.

The first payment is paid immediately and the balance is offered in yearly instalments that can sometimes take up to 30 years to complete.

Each annuity payment rises by 4%, making the last payment the biggest.

But most winners take the full or lump sum payout, or the cash option, that currently works out to $550 million for the Mega Millions draw this Friday and $410 million for the Powerball draw.

The biggest jackpot ever struck in Mega Millions was $1.5 billion for a ticket purchased in South Carolina in October 2018.

The current odds of winning the Powerball draw are one in 292.2 million and for Mega Millions it is one in 302.5 million.

While both Powerball and Mega Millions are played across 45 states and in Washington, D.C., and the US Virgin Islands, Powerball is also extended to Puerto Rico.
