Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday tested positive for the deadly covid-19, his office said, though there was no clarity on how he had contracted the virus.
“The President of the Republic has been diagnosed positive for covid-19 today,” his office said in a statement. “This diagnosis was made following a PCR test performed at the onset of the first symptoms.”
France’s presidency said Macron will elf-isolate over seven days and will run the country remotely. All his tours have been cancelled, including one to Lebanon on 22 December.
Macron had attended a European Council heads of state meet on 10-11 December.
French premier Jean Castex is also going into quarantine as he had come into contact with Macron in the past few days.
