New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Saturday unveiled the design of the new Parliament building on Twitter.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of the building complex on 10 December and the construction work is expected to be completed by October 22, Birla tweeted.
“Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri @narendramodi will perform Bhumi pujan of the new Parliament building on 10 December. Construction work is likely to be completed by October 2022. On 75th anniversary of our Independence, Session will be held in the new Parliament,” Birla said in the tweet.
Describing the new complex, Birla said “the total built-up area of the new Parliament Building, set into four floors & costing 970 crore rupees, is approx. 64500 sq meters. It is 17000 sq meters more compared to the present building.”
“In the new Parliament Building, Lok Sabha Chamber will be located at the ground floor & will accommodate 888 Members while the Rajya Sabha Chamber will seat 384 Members. Moreover, during Joint Sessions, 1272 Members will be able to sit in the Chamber,” Birla tweeted.
“The present building will continue to be in use even after the construction of the new one. Due care will be taken to preserve the heritage character of the extant premises during construction work,” Birla added.
Thespeaker said efforts are on to ensure that “visibility of the Original Parliament is not obscured by the construction of the new Building. All existing statues in the Parliament House Complex will be relocated in a befitting manner”.
