Controversy over ‘Tandav’ on Amazon Prime Video

New Delhi: The government has reportedly sought an explanation from video streaming service Amazon Prime Video over the alleged ridicule of deities in web series Tandav.

Tandav, which casts Dimple Kapadia, Saif Ali Khan, Dino Morea, Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Sunil Grover, Kritika Kamra, Gauhar Khan and Kumud Mishra, premiered on Amazon Prime Video on Friday.

The reported move came after BJP MP Manoj Kotak said he has asked information and broadcasting minister Prakash Javadekar to ban Amazon Prime Video’s series Tandav over alleged ridicule of deities.

Political drama Tandav has been directed and produced by Ali Abbas Zafar with Himanshu Kishan Mehra and is written by Gaurav Solanki of Article 15 fame.

Kotak, an MP from Mumbai North-East, claimed attempts are often made on such platforms to not show deities in good light.

Amazon Prime Video’s PR said it “won’t be responding” on the matter.

The government recently brought streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar, under its ambit, giving the ministry of information and broadcasting powers to regulate policies in the digital space.
