Thiruvananthapuram: Arya Rajendran, a 21-year-old second-year BSc Mathematics student of All Saints College in Thiruvananthapuram, is all set to become the youngest mayor of any town in India.
The daughter of an electrician K Rajendran and LIC agent Sreelatha Rajendran, Arya is likely to be made the mayor of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPM, to which Arya Rajendran belongs, is expected to hand charge of Thiruvananthapuram to her despite several high-profile candidates being in contention for the top post.
Arya won from the Mudavanmughal ward of the city corporation recently, winning 2,872 votes, 549 more than the rival Congress candidate.
The Thiruvanathapuram district secretariat recommended her for the post and is likely to be ratified by the party state secretariat at its meeting on Saturday.
If approved, Arya, will be the youngest mayor ever in India.
Arya is a member of the Students Federation of India and is state president of Balasangham, the children’s wing of the CPM.
Arya told meadia persons that CPM will take the right decision and that she had not been informed by anyone about the move yet.
CPM’s K Sreekumar, the current Thiruvananthapuram mayor, suffered a shock defeat.
The ruling CPM-led Left Democratic Front won 52 seats in the 100-member corporation council while the opposition BJP has 32 seats.
