‘Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo’ among most watched films on Netflix

Indians are more addicted to films on Netflix than any other nationality where the video streaming giant operates in, the company said while unveiling data on what its customers watched.

The video streaming platforms is increasingly releasing more details on what its viewers watch to highlight what’s working and lay at rest criticism the some shows and films get lost as new shows enter.

Allu Arjun’s Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo, Anna Ben’s Kappela, Satyadev’s Uma Maheswara Ugra Roopasya and Dulquer Salman’s Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal were among the top 10 most watched films from south India this year, Netflix said. 

Spanish series Money Heist featured on its top 10 series in India for 170 days, followed by German sci-fi series Dark, which featured in the top 10 for 95 days, the streaming site said.

Money Heist was one of the 10 most popular shows in 92 different countries this year, it said.

In the US, shows from Spain, Germany and France ranked among the most popular, while viewership of Korea dramas almost tripled, the company said.

The company said it will eclipse 200 million subscribers worldwide in the year’s final quarter, with more than 60% of its users hailing from outside the US, including 62 million in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, its largest region abroad.

The Netflix statement pointed to some viewership trends during the pandemic. Interest in home baking shows soared 50% in March, while searches for sad movies rose in April and comedy ruled in October.
