Republic Day chief guest British PM Boris Johnson cancels India visit

London/New Delhi: British Premier Boris Johnson on Tuesday cancelled his planned visit to India to take part in the Republic Day celebrations later this month.

Johnson cited the need to oversee the covid pandemic response back at home for cancelling the trip.

“The prime minister spoke to (Indian) Prime Minister Modi this morning to express his regret that he will be unable to visit India,” a Downing Street spokeswoman said.

“In light of the national lockdown announced last night, and the speed at which the new coronavirus variant is spreading, the prime minister said it is important for him to focus on the domestic response to the virus.”

Britain last month announced Johnson’s intent to tour India to expedite trade talks as the nation scouts for bilateral deals after leaving the EU.

Johnson has announced a new national lockdown since Monday.
